“Saturated fat and CVD: importance of inter-individual variation in the response of serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol”
Among the many controversial, “diet wars,” that exist across mainstream and social media, the debate surrounding how saturated fat impacts lipid metrics (i.e. total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B, etc.) is one that almost anybody perusing the health and fitness sphere has come across.
Griffin and Lovegrove’s review from January, 2024 above offers an engaging breakdown of the history of the actual research behind this debate (I say, “actual,” because I find most people discussing this topic haven’t actually read any of the relevant research but are instead regurgitating whatever the people supporting their bias have said/written–I have certainly been egregiously guilty of this myself) as well as nuances such as how LDL responses to diet vary from person to person. If you’re at all interested in the topics of lipidology and cardiovascular disease, or simply understanding how what you eat may affect your risk of heart attack or stroke (which combined make up the the leading cause of death globally) I highly recommend this read.
In addition, if you’re interested in diving deeper beyond this paper, Dr. Peter Attia’s podcast series with Dr. Thomas Dayspring is a phenomenal resource, and I also wrote about lipidology extensively in the Learning Lipids Series.
